The majority of our clients are on three to four social media platforms. We’ve made absolute sure that Google My Business is one of them for the vast majority.
For those unfamiliar with Google My Business, it has essentially become Google’s de facto social media platform. Back on April 2nd (our company’s anniversary) Google officially shuttered Google+, what was once their “answer” to Facebook.
At this point, most are aware of how widely unsuccessful Google+ was. Although they introduced interesting concepts, such as it’s use of Communities, and had seamless integration to other Google services (including the aforementioned), it just wasn’t used by the vast majority of social media users. That honor, instead, was bestowed upon the imposing presence that is Facebook.
The lack of usage, along with an unfortunate data leak, led to the rapid retirement of Google+. So, where did this recent decision leave Google?
In a much better place.
The truth is that all of the hogwash of Google+ distracted from a vehicle that’s simpler to comprehend and much more relevant to most business owners out there: Google My Business.
This platform can be shown through a quick Google search for most businesses with minimal SEO effort. On the surface level, users will see general contact information regarding a business, including phone number, hours of operation, and a website.
In addition, it’s a phenomenal channel for reviews. As the world’s largest search engine that controls approximately 93% of all internet traffic, having customers leave testimonials on your Google My Business listing is paramount to edging out the competition.
On the flip side, a few bad reviews there can send your business to a nightmarish hellscape in the form of not being included in the 4.5 stars and higher filter.
The fact of the matter is that most people out there don’t want to make the time to search tons and tons of businesses prior to choosing one. Thus, they rely on the quick and easy Google Review filter. 5.0 is good. 1.0 is bad. A decision that could’ve taken minutes (a lifetime nowadays) is now whittled down to seconds.
Aside from the front-and-center information, Google My Business can also be utilized for building incredible SEO. Let’s face it: most businesses can be viewed as commodities in 2019, even if they really aren’t. With all perceived as being equal, most small and medium-sized business owners have no choice but to directly compete against the rest.
So, how do they do they win out? Two words: Content Marketing.
Like any other social media platform, Google naturally rewards those who uses its social media equivalent. They do so through enhanced rankings in Google Search and Maps results.
By consistently sharing posts and photos on Google My Business, your SEO will naturally tend to rise over time. Unbelievably, most businesses completely ignore this platform, instead focusing on the mainstream Facebook and Instagram. Dedicating time, energy, and yes, money elsewhere isn’t bad in itself. However, Google My Business is probably the most direct way of controlling your presence on a search engine results page.
And do you know what that translates to?
Whether you’re just launching your social media presence or you’ve been around for awhile, Google My Business is a great tool for elevating your business.
